History
Information on past activities of the society and history of Tuorla
Observatory are recorded on this page.
20 Dec 2007: The fifth constitutive meeting of the society was held
at Tuorla Observatory.
18 Dec 2006: The fourth constitutive meeting of the society was held
at Tuorla Observatory.
18 Sep 2006: The Prime Minister of the Republic of Finland,
Matti Vanhanen visited Tuorla Observatory. See also
photos of the visit.
20 May 2006: The society organised an open house day at Tuorla
Observatory (programme and photographs).
During the day over 500 visitors came to see the premises and equipment of
the observatory. About 100 children took part in the overwhelmingly popular
astronomical treasure hunt.
22 Dec 2005: The third constitutive meeting of the society was held
at Tuorla Observatory.
4 Sep 2005: A "Peek to the Country" (Kurkistus maalle) event was held
on the grounds of the Countryside College of Southwest Finland. Tuorlan
Astronomical Society attended to the event by organising tours to Tuorla
Observatory.
11-15 Aug 2005: Turku Fair was organized in Turku Fair and
Congress Centre. The society took part in the fair by presenting its
activities and those of Tuorla Observatory with a PowerPoint presentation.
8 Jun 2005: The society feasibility study of Tuorla Observatory
Visitor Centre was publicised together with a similar study by
Countryside College of Southwest Finland and Yltöinen Research Station
at Tuorla Hostel. The event was attended by representatives of the media.
13 Dec 2004: The second constitutive meeting of the society was held
at Tuorla Observatory.
24 Nov 2004: Dr David Jauncey (Australian Telescope National Facility)
and Dr Martin George (curator of Queen Victoria Museum in Tasmania) handed
over to Tuorla Observatory a metal container comprising a portion of
cremated ashes of "the father of radio astronomy", Dr Grote Reber.

5 Sep 2004: A "Peek to the Country" (Kurkistus maalle) event was held
on the grounds of the Countryside College of Southwest Finland. Tuorlan
Astronomical Society attended to the event by organising tours to Tuorla
Observatory.
June & July, 2004: The society and
Countryside College of Southwest
Finland had a joint exhibition of photographs in
Hostel Tuorla.
Theme of the exhibition was 'Two Tuorlas'; observatory and countryside
college. Photographs displayed in the exhibition may be
ordered.
15 May 2004: The society organised an open house day at Tuorla
Observatory (programme and photographs).
During the day an unexpected multitude of people, almost 1000 visitors,
came to see the premises and equipment of the observatory.
8 Mar 2004: The first constitutive meeting of the society was held
at Tuorla Observatory.
24 Feb 2004:
Register of Associations, a division of National Board of Patents and
Registration, accepted the declaration of association of the society.
The society was given registration number 188847 and the official name of the society changed to Tuorlan
tähtitieteellinen seura ry, with abbreviation ry, registred
association, added to the end of the name.
16 Jan 2004: Tuorlan Astronomical Society was founded at Tuorla
Observatory in Piikkiö, Finland.
