European Southern Observatory (ESO)

European Shouthern Observatory was founded in 1962. Finland joined ESO on 1st July 2004. Nowadays there are 12 members in the ESO: Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom.

ESO headquarters are in Germany and observatories are in Chile. In interferometric mode the ESO VLT telescope is the largest in the world (16 metres). ESO is building a radio telescope array ALMA and planning for a 50-metre ELT telescope.
