SECOND ANNOUNCEMENT

High Energy Blazar Astronomy

Tuorla Observatory, Finland, 17-21 June 2002


An international workshop on High Energy Blazar Astronomy will be organized in Turku, Finland, to mark the 50th anniversary of Tuorla Observatory. The meeting will be held just before the midsummer festivities in Finland, between 17-21 June 2002. The participants will thus have the opportunity to enjoy the Midnight Sun and the pleasant summer weather in Turku, or elsewhere in Finland.

The meeting will be held at the Countryside College of Southwestern Finland at Tuorla, adjacent to Tuorla Observatory and 12 kilometres from the centre of Turku. We are planning for a meeting with about 80 participants.

Meeting Format

The meeting will consist of invited talks (duration 45 + 10 minutes discussion), contributed talks (20 + 5 minutes) and posters. The posters will be displayed during the whole meeting close to the lecture hall, where the coffee breaks will be held.

Registration

Registration can be made, either filling in the registration form and posting or sending it by Fax to the conference center, or by filling in the form on the web-page and sending that to us. The registration fee is 200 EUR (about $180), before 1st of April. After that the fee will be 250 EUR ($225). If you are paying your fees with a credit card, DO NOT send your card number via internet or email, use the Fax.

Abstracts

The abstract for your presentation can be sent either by email to us or by filling in the appropriate boxes on the web-page and sending that. Remember to include information about the type of presentation you would like to give (contributed talk or poster), and also your name and address. Since we have limited time available for oral presentations we may have to move presentations from one category to another. The abstract must be less than 15 lines long. The deadline for abstracts is also April 1st.

Accommodations

We have reserved rooms for the participants in a hotel in Turku, at the university guest house, and at Hostel Tuorla (close to the meeting place). Daily bus transportation will be provided between Turku and Tuorla before and after the daily programme. Please fill in the hotel reservation form (also available at the web-page) and send it to our congress centre. We will send you confirmation on your hotel reservations. All hotel fees are payable directly to the hotels. All major hotels in Finland accept credit cards.

Travelling to Turku

Turku can be reached by plane from Helsinki or Stockholm, by bus or train from Helsinki, and by ferry from Stockholm. There are regular (about once an hour) buses from the Helsinki airport to Turku. The distance from Helsinki to Turku is about 160 kilometers. This will cost about 20 EUR. From the Turku airport there is regular bus service to the City. A taxi will cost about 15-20 EUR.

Pre (post) Conference Travel

Finland and its surroundings are exotic and beautiful. They are best experienced during the summer (although Christmas time in Finland is also special). If you plan to travel in Finland during your visit, please contact e.g. the following travel agency to make arrangements for your tours:

Social Events

We would like you to mark into the registration form, which events you plan to attend. Also inform us, if you are bringing any accompanying persons to these events, so that we can make the proper arrangements.

Welcoming cocktail

This will be held (tentatively) at the old observatory building in Turku on Monday (17th June) evening, starting at 19:00.

Conference dinner

We are planning for a conference dinner (tentatively) for the Wednesday (19th June). The costs of the dinner are included in the registration fee.

Sauna

Sauna and swimming, with some refreshments and snacks, will be provided on a suitable occasion.

Proceedings

The meeting presentations will be published in the PASP conference series. The macro package, containing the format for the publication will be send to the participants or can be obtained from the Tuorla web site using the following links:
