The Master's programme consists of two years of full-time study. Approximately 3/4 of the time is spent on coursework and about 1/4 of the time is devoted to writing a thesis, on a topic of the candidate's choosing. Master's topics are supervised by a senior member of the research and/or teaching staff.
A Bachelor of Science (BSc) degree, or its equivalent, is required to enter the programme, as well as demonstrated English language proficiency, and certified documentation of the applicant's degree and coursework.
The Master's consists of 120 "credit points" (ECTS - European Credit Transfer System), with approximately 50 points in major studies, 40 points covering the Master's thesis and training, and the remaining 30 points from other supporting studies. Courses for the major component cover a wide range of general astronomy, space physics, astrophysical theory, data processing and programming, astronomical observation, dynamics, and optical and radio astronomy. A number of options are available for the minor, including a wide selection of physics, mathematics and economics courses taught in English.
Each of our MSc students is assigned a local student tutor. A tutor is a fellow student interested in meeting people from around the world and willing to help out with different practical matters, such as meeting the new student on arrival, picking up keys from Student accommodation. The Student Village Foundation (TYS) is able to provide reasonably priced accommodation, and can be applied for in advance through their website.
An orientation course for new international students takes place during the first week of September of each year, just prior to the start of term and teaching.
There are presently no tuition fees at our department. However, students registering in the Master's or PhD programmes will need to provide their own funding for their living costs. More information on housing, living costs in Finland, the city of Turku and Finland can be found here.
