Master's and doctoral degrees in Astronomy and Space Physics

The Department of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Turku offers an extensive programme in astronomy and space physics leading to Master's (MSc) and doctorate (PhD) degrees, with all instruction given in the English language.

Students have access to world-leading facilities at the European Space Agency, the European Southern Observatory, telescopes in the Canary Islands in Spain, over 20 staff astrophysicists and space scientists and supercomputing facilities. We have strong connections with St. Petersburg State University and other universities across Europe and around the world. Major research areas include solar physics, stars and stellar systems, cosmic ray physics, space instrumentation, large scale structure in the Universe, cosmology, active galaxies and instrumentation for both ground- and space-based observations.

Master's programme

The Master's programme consists of two years of full-time study. A Bachelor of Science (BSc) degree, or its equivalent, is required to enter the programme, as well as demonstrated English language proficiency. Find out more through the link on the left.

How To Apply

Applications for academic year 2012-2013 are open from Dec 01, 2011 to Jan 31, 2012, and the results will be announced not later than 2 April 2012. A guide to applying is available by clicking on the "How to Apply" icon on the left.

Doctoral programme

Our doctoral programme consists of coursework in a main subject and minor subjects, and a PhD thesis typically consisting of 4 to 6 research publications in internationally refereed journals. Find out more through the link on the left.

Financing your studies

There are presently no tuition fees in Finland for domestic or foreign students. However, students registering in the Master's or PhD programmes will usually need to provide their own funding for their living costs. Find out more through the link on the left.

Specialisations

There are six specialisations in the teaching programmes. Further information of their content and studies involved can be found in the Master's and Doctoral programme links shown on the left.
