World Wide Web Information Page

I promised some of my friends to make a page of all those nice little helpful hints that make your life so much easier, not to mention more pleasant, when dealing with the WWW but which are not mentioned anywhere or if they are it is a real drag to find them.

Please note that 1) this page contains very simple material which might even be done more efficiently in some other way, 2) it is updated whenever I find something new and interesting I feel should be on this page, and 3) the information and opinions on this page are filtered through my own experiences and values of life in general (an example would be that in internet connections I prefer speed over fancy artwork and 3D animations).

I have used Windows 3.11 Netscape, Windows 95 Netscape, and Linux (UNIX) Netscape to browse WWW pages and noticed there are some differences. These instructions were made mainly in Linux (as the system is the most flexible of all of the mentioned ones) but they should apply well to other systems as well (at least if you use some common sense you should guess easily what is meant if the exact item is not found on some menu, or something...). As I am a devoted Windows fan I must compliment it for being superior in showing images in more detail and with better resolution.

Right-clicking mouse on an image
Whenever your Netscape (or such) is running and you have found an interesting page somewhere you can copy pictures, lines, icons, and other images into your hard drive by right-clicking the mouse on the image. This produces a small window next to your pointer (arrow) from which you can choose "Save this Image As...". This in turn creates a larger window "Save As..." in which you can select the directory you wish to save the image into, give it a new name (the original name is set in as default), and change the filter. If you don't touch the button for "Format for Saved Document:" you save the image with the correct filter. If you wish to save it as postscript or as text (?) then you may choose those from the abovementioned button.

SHIFT-left-clicking mouse on a link
If you want to copy anything set in as a link (images, html pages, text files, ...) you can do it by pressing the SHIFT-key down and left-clicking the mouse on top of the link. This produces the same "Save As..." window as described above.

How to get an easy start with your own home page
Just copy an existing WWW page you think looks cool and change the information on it. See below how to see and copy an existing page.

How to see and copy an existing page
When you are looking at a nice web page and want to know how it was made you only need to click on the "View" menu and select Source. Netscape opens a new window that contains the html code of the page in sight. Now you can select any part of the code with your mouse pointer and place it into another wndow in which you have some text editor running (MS Word, Write, Edit, Emacs, or anything really). If you want to copy the whole page as html code don't "View Source" but just select "Save As..." in "File" menu and check that the filter is html (if the Format is set as Source (the default) then the html filter should be automatically selected).
