Work on the new mirror manufacturing facilities began on 8th of August
when lumberjacks came to clear the building area from trees and on 9th
of August when removal of excess earth began. The facilities are needed
to grind and polish the 3.5 metre mirror that will become the primary
mirror of Herschel satellite, scheduled to launch into space in 2007.
Herschel will be a telescope observing the universe in infrared
wavelengths.
