A walk to the Falls of Bruar

As my trekking shoes were wet from the walk of Saturday I couldn't attend to the climb to Ben Vrackie on Sunday, 30th of July. Instead, I decided to make a walk on nice paths and roads to the Falls of Bruar.

Click any miniature photo to see a larger version (physical size varies between 102 and 340 kB).

River Tilt I started my journey by following River Tilt upstream.

View point The dukes of Atholl had built a view point along the River Tilt. Unfortunately the view from that point is only about thirty metres to both directions.

A tree An interesting tree trunk.

An overpass An old overpass (for pedestrians only).

Balvene Pillar James, the 2nd Duke of Atholl, built this Balvene Pillar on Tom na Croiche or Hangman's Knoll in 1755 in memory of the last public hanging that took place on this hill in 1630.

A view from the Balvene Pillar A view south-west from the Balvene Pillar. The small grey blob in the left is the statue of Hercules and under it is a part of the stone fence encircling the Hercules Garden. The distant mist covered mountain top above the statue is that of Schiehallion or the Fairy Mountain (named because of the mists that often cover it).

Another view from the Balvene Pillar A view north-west from the Balvene Pillar.

Small forest A small forest between views of the two previous photos. Behind the forest and the hill it stands on is Old Blair (a village? of a couple of houses, an ex-inn, and a farm).

The high road and the low road From Old Blair I entered a forest.

Banvie Burn A small river (Banvie Burn?) runs through the forest and near the place I came out of the forest is a small bridge (surely infested by trolls or goblins).

Glen Banvie From hillside above the bridge there is a nice view along Glen Banvie. The hill rising on the right is Meall Reamhar.

Glen Banvie again An another view on Glen Banvie. The mountain in the background is(?) Beinn A'Chart.

Looking back A view from the other end of Glen Banvie looking back. Thistle was starting to blossom. The highest mountain in the background is Ben Vrackie (841 metres high), onto which some of the summer school participants were just then ascending.

Glen Banvie Wood Entering the forest again. There is a huge forest around Blair Castle - this part of the forest is called Glen Banvie Wood.

Fern A lot of fern was growing in the forest.

Schiehallion An another view over Glen Garry towards Schiehallion.

Hawk Walking in the forest I heard birds of prey screaming to each other over me. I managed to get a couple of photos of them but, due to the limited capabilities of my camera, this is the best I got. I blew up the bird so as to see it a bit better.

Caterpillar There was a little clearing in the forest. There I saw some dragonflies and this interesting caterpillar with horns. Again I enlarged the creature to see actually anything of it.

Falls of Bruar The Falls of Bruar. Finally I got there but didn't want to see them any closer. I have a mild acrophobia and the almost vertical slopes of the gorge didn't appeal to me too much.

Highland water Clear Highland waters streaming down.

Little falls After the main falls there are numerous little ones along half a kilometre of the stream.

A bridge A bridge going across the stream.

A bridge again The same bridge from the other direction.

Baluain Wood The edge of Baluain Wood and a house that has seen its prime days long ago.

Approaching Blair Atholl Approaching Blair Atholl again I spotted some cows on the castle grounds.

The cows The same cows seen a little closer.
