Mediaeval astronomy was a part of theology. Especially calculating the location of Easter in calendar, computus, required complex astronomical calculations. Finns studied in European cathedral schools / universities. University of Uppsala in Sweden was founded in 1477; professor of astronomy in 1595.

Per Brahe
(1602-1680)

General governor in Finland, Per Brahe, founded the Academy of Turku in 1640 to educate Finnish bureaucrats and support Finnish culture. Among eleven professors the one of natural sciences and the one of mathematics were responsible for teaching astronomy.
