Tuorla Observatory

Building Tuorla Observatory

After the World War II Iso-Heikkilä Observatory of Turku University could not function efficiently due to increased light pollution and smoke from a nearby power plant. Activites had to be moved to a hill in the estate of Tuorla in Piikkiö.

Yrjö Väisälä, by then an academician of the Academy of Finland, built a tunnel laboratory, several telescope domes and supporting buildings to Tuorla. Activities began in the new observatory on 29th April 1952.
