Sorry for the appalling quality of these photos. As you can clearly see they are snapshots from TV screen. I just had to put them here because this is the "Carnaval" week on the Canary islands. [Don't click them larger unless you are using a screen resolution larger than 1024x768 pixels for they really will not look any better.] These are competitors for the carnival queen title of Santa Cruz de Tenerife. I don't know what carnival queens do other than either carry these huge "costumes" or, like in Las Palmas (of Gran Canaria), roll them around for they are so gigantic there that they are actually on wheels and the poor girl inside has to push and pull them around on the stage. Apparently these costumes or settings cost thousands of euros (or even more) and it takes most of the year between carnivals to build them. (The girl in the last photo was the happy winner this year.)
