GET-TOGETHER PARTY

All participants are invited to a Get-together Party held at VPK:n talo (Volunteer Fire-brigade Banquet Hall). The building, completed in 1892, was not built solely for its own purposes, but also to serve as a party venue for the townspeople. From the house’s guest book you can find many well-known names. Besides famous Finnish persons, such as Jean Sibelius and Oskar Merikanto, for instance Josephine Baker performed there.

Please note that the event is free of charge for congress participants, but pre-registration is required.

 

Restaurant KouluCONFERENCE DINNER

The Conference Dinner is held at the Brewery Restaurant Koulu. The beautiful neo-renaissance building was built in 1889 and it formerly served as a school. Thus the name of the restaurant “Koulu”, school in English. Nowadays Koulu is the largest brewery restaurant in Finland.
Come and enjoy a buffet dinner accompanied by live music performances and good company.

VISIT TO TUORLA OBSERVATORY

The bus departs from LOGOMO at 19.00, but will drive by the city centre hotel Sokos Hotel Hamburger Börs (Kauppiaskatu 6) and stop also there to pick up participants at 19.10.

Tuorla Observatory was founded in 1952 to replace the old observatory near the city centre of Turku. Since then this special unit of the University of Turku has grown to the largest astronomical institute in Finland. Tuorla Observatory is a division of the Department of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Turku, working in close collaboration with the Finnish Centre for Astronomy with ESO: FINCA.  Besides being a research institution, Tuorla Observatory acts as a teaching and meeting facility; some of the astronomy teaching of the University of Turku takes place in Tuorla, and many international scientific conferences as well as local conferences and meetings are held there every year. Furthermore, the Tuorla Astronomical Society offers a wide package of tours, presentations and lectures on astronomy to general public.

The guide will meet the participants in front of the Turku Cathedral

Join this tour to learn about the intriguing, eventful and, at times, dramatic history of the Old Great Square and Turku Cathedral. Turku is the oldest town in Finland and the medieval life in Turku revolved around this very area. The Old Great Square continues to play an important role in a Finnish tradition even today, as it is where Christmas peace is declared to all of Finland every year in a live TV broadcast. During the old Turku tour, you will get to visit the atmospheric Turku Cathedral and hear some of its many hidden secrets from an insider, a well-informed professional guide.

 

LoistokariDINNER CRUISE TO LOISTOKARI ISLAND

s/s Ukkopekka departs from the river Aura, by the Martinsilta bridge at 19.00, return at 23.00.

Tickets à 52 eur (children 3-14 years -50%), the ticket includes cruise & programme, starters on board Ukkopekka and dinner on the Loistokari island, drinks can be bought separately.

Join a cruise on board the steamship s/s Ukkopekka to the little island of Loistokari in the beautiful Turku archipelago. An archipelago style traditional buffet dinner will be served outdoors on the tiny island, followed by live music  and dancing on the quay. Spend an evening to remember in  the unique archipelago and enjoy the bright Nordic summer night!

The guide will meet the participants on the side of the Turku Cathedral, by the Agricola statue.


Stepping into the history and present of the academic Turku!
What did Per Brahe the Younger actually think of the people in Turku? With what did Alexander I of Russia fall in love on his visit in Turku in 1809? How does the Klondike gold relate to the current location of the university?
The Academic Walk is a unique opportunity to experience the entire and colourful history of the academic Turku. The guided tour leads the walker from the side of the Turku Cathedral all the way to the heart of the modern campus. During the walk we wander from amidst the legacy of Mikael Agricola, the founder of Finnish written language, to the university hill, on which the new university was built as a "free nation’s gift to free science".

The bus departs from LOGOMO at 19.00, but will drive by the city centre hotel Sokos Hotel Hamburger Börs (Kauppiaskatu 6) and stop also there to pick up participants at 19.10.

An opportunity to relax in the traditional Finnish Sauna in a traditional farm, only a stone’s throw from Turku, situated amidst beautiful countryside by the Gulf of Piikkiö. Kavalto farm has a long history dating all the way back to the Middle Ages and interestingly, it has remained with the same family since 1687. After enjoying the hot steams in sauna, you may take a swim in the cool waters of a pond (don’t forget to bring your swimsuit). Light dinner will be served.
