Turku Academy Observatory

Turku Old Observatory

At the end of Finnish War Sweden ceded Finland to Russia at 1809. Czar Alexander I (1777-1825) visited Turku in 1812. He was introduced to an idea of building an observatory to serve the needs of science and navigation. C. L. Engel designed a building that was finished in autumn 1819.

Argelander log

Turku Academy observer Friedrich Argelander had just observed the star [beta] Aquilae on 4th September 1827, when there is a marking in the log: "Here observations were interrupted by a terrible fire that burned down the city almost entirely saving, thanks to the God, the observatory intact."
