Moving Academy of Turku to Helsinki

Helsinki Observatory 1870

Helsinki became capital of Finland in 1812. After the great fire of Turku the Academy was also moved. In 1828 the czar ordered a new observatory to be built in Helsinki (finished in 1834). Argelander became the first professor of astronomy in Finland on 1828. Observations were finished in Turku in 1831, when last of the equipment left.

The Finns compiled some of the most extensive stellar maps in the latter half of the 19th century - as part of international collaboration. The Finns were at the fore front of science in celestial mechanics. A special interest was laid on the theory of relativity in the 1900's.
